They were pushed out of their comfort zone to experiment with the boundaries of contemporary photography.
We live in a world where the digital image is omnipresent. Most images are only observed via a bright screen and have almost no physical or tactile qualities any more. That’s why it is interesting to look at what we have lost in our digital photographic process. This project is a search for the materiality and limits of the medium. It is an invitation to search through and experiment with analogue or new techniques for a new contemporary visual language that is both visual and physical presence.

From October 1 onwards, MANUFACTUUR 3.0 has been a continuously changing temporary place of production in the beguinage houses in Hasselt and C-mine design centre in Genk. Are you curious about the trajectories of the participants and the (preliminary) results of their research? On January 7, the designers and artists will present a round-up of their MANUFACTUUR 3.0 projects. You can also participate in a number of special activities and toast to the new year with a glass of unique waste beer jenever, specially developed by designer Henriette Waal for MANUFACTUUR 3.0.

Deze week gingen we samen met Veerle Tytgat op zoek naar modder en slib die ze zal gebruiken om stoffen te kleuren.
Veerle Tytgat gebruikt de natuur als medium om textiel te verven. Naast haar zoektocht naar grondstoffen op basis van planten, graaft ze dieper de bodem in. Welk kleurenpallet zit verborgen in onze aarde?
De verscheidenheid in bloemen, vruchten en andere planten zijn meer zichtbaar dan de variaties in onze grond. Ze experimenteert in haar onderzoek met lokale met plantenextracten, verschillende soorten modder, slib en klei. Verven met natuurlijke materialen is complexer en onverwachter dan met synthetische verfstoffen. Systematisch onthullen kleuren zich, niet wetende welke de resultaten zullen zijn.
The photographic project “Strain” consists of 5 photographic prints made with an emulsion of elderberry and juniper (jenever).
Strain is a force that pulls or stretches something to an extreme or damaging degree. At the same time it also means “draining or sifting a substance.” “
Strain focuses on the complex relationship between mankind and nature in which both mankind and nature are under pressure.
The images portray the damage caused by a severe storm that befell the Haspengouw landscape. Haspengouw is very dependent on fruit farming and a storm of this scale is disastrous for the farmers who lost an entire harvest and their trees. What we see here is the interaction between man and nature.
The Haspengouw landscape is a functional landscape full of orchards, fields, et cetera. It is nature arranged into plots. It’s as functional as possible. Structured to increase yields. The storm upsets the entire arrangement and changes everything into chaos and turmoil. Severe storms will increase in frequency in the future due to global warming, and the landscape will be under even more pressure.
